In all cases I preheated them with boiling water and left the boiling water in the unit for 5 minutes before refilling with my hot beverage. Preheat and you will LOVE this airpot. These airpots work as advertised! they are stainless lined, no glass inserts. Therefore they are very durable but do require preheating with hot water for a couple minutes before use. After preheating, they seem to keep coffee hot for several hours. We use 4 of them in our church lobby every Sunday for 4-5 hours. they have been working flawlessly.
